The overall theme of the first trilogy was that it was a fun children’s adventure story, a cross between a buck rogers sci fi serial, and the comparative mythology of joseph campbell, trying to find these powerful character archetypes that resonate across all cultures .
The prequels move away from those fun, character-driven stories, and focus on a larger political story that ends up as a depressing tragedy.
It tried to use CGI and and quirky characters like jar jar to cover up the awful plotlines and dialogue.
Heroes and villains: Anakin was the main character, and for two movies he was an unlikeable whiny brat who murders children: the target audience of Star wars. Padme is just kinda along for the ride, and doesn’t do anything that memorable.
General grievous, count dooku, and the other minor villains are decent, but only interesting because of surface level things about them… oooh he can hold 4 lightsabers at once, or he trained qui gonn!.
Obi wan and Qui gonn are bright spots, Ewan Macgregor carries the whole thing. He’s the only one you really wanteto spend time with and see on screen. But they killed Obi Wan’s main nemesis, darth maul, in the very first movie, so he spends the rest of the trilogy playing space detective and babysitting anakin.
The political storyline is somewhat interesting, and there’s some critiques of Bush-era imperialism in there ( just as star wars had a critique of the us war on vietnam ), but it becomes the entire focus.
In star wars, every single character, han, luke, leah, and even vader, goes through changes brought on by their trials and grow as people. In the prequels, there is no character development apart from anakin, who becomes more childish, whiny, and unlikeable as the story goes on.
I can 100% say that the prequels mostly suffered from:
a) Being too rushed and having too much stuff cut out
b) Having some of the worst dialogue writing and line delivery possible
Second problem was mostly solved by… insert drum roll Our Russian dub. Because the translators managed to salvage the dialogues and while keeping most of the original sense made them cosmically less cringe AND the dub actors actually managed to fix up the acting issues in terms of line delivery. Anakin instead of sounding like a little spoiled brat manages to deliver some MENACING SITH VIBES.
You wouldn’t believe how much it helps to sell that the guy is not just a whiny child, but an actual evil motherfucker who turned dark.
So yeah. With proper acting, better writing and more screen time it had potential to be good without the need to drastically alter what we’ve got in the end, I’d say.
Pretty bad comment, you have activated my nerd brain with your cringe opinion, prepare to have your comment dissected;
The original trilogy was not just an fun movie trilogy at all lol, it critisized imperialism, fascism, mass destruction weapons, haved an considerably lot of politics (the first conversation between Leia and Vader is about her telling him he cant just attack an diplomatic ship) the main characters are literally revoluctionarys fighting against an fascist empire, on episode 6 its basically vietcongs vs western imperialists, and i think that the battle of Hoth might have been based on battles on the USSR during WW2. And there would probably have had much more politics on the first movies if they where made on the USSR, Lucas even sayed one time on an interview that the soviet cinematic industry haved a lot more freedom. And what diversity on the OG trilogy, almost every human character are white americans, there is not even a lot of aliens on the main roles, they are mostly just background characters with no lines. The prequels mainly fixed all of that, compared the cast of the OG with the prequels, more aliens and more different people.
Whats bad with a more well written, serious storyline? It connected with the original trilogy very well, and it enhanced it. And it did not use CGI and quircky characters to cover itself, the effects where the best of the time, the CGI was revoluctionary, lucas film basically pionereed the CGI technology, and most of the effects of the film where not pure CGI, but haved IRL models too. And Jar Jar appeared for literally one chapter as an side kick character, he did not even have a lot of screen time. And he was important to the plot. And i dont see people shitting on C3PO as they do with Jar Jar, when they haved basically the same role, and C3PO haved 3 times more screentime.
Anakin is the best character in the entire series, he starts as an slave that was born as an miracle, went to become an jedi with the hopes of coming back to his mother, the only person who did see potential on him besides his mom (Qui-gon) died days after meeting him, and he was forced to grow up with people who did not like him nor respect him, a bunch of child abducting monks that think that having emotions is bad. Of course he would grow up as an disturbed person with basically zero social interaction knowledge, thats why his conversations with padme are weird, he does not know what he should say to a woman, she goes along with it because she also is socially inept on this area, the child killing thing is supposed to be shocking and bad, the tuskan raiders was right after his mom died on his arms, he destroyed the village on rage because they tortured and killed her, he did not care about nobody at that moment, he haved all the reasons to be mad. The second time with the younglings is more complicated, he did not want to kill him, he even thought on sparing them, but he did know that Palpatine would do who knows what with them, so he thought it was better to kill them. It sounds extremelly fucked, and it is, and anakin was fucked at that moment, his entire life was literally being destroyed around him and he was the one who helped it being destroyed. It should be pointed out he did not become full sith them, it was when he killed the separatist leaders that his eyes becomed yellow, because he enjoyed killing them. And Padme is one of the most important characters there, she is the lover of Anakin, she was one of the main senators fighting against the capitalists trying to destroy her planet, she helped to end the racial difference between gungans and humans on her planet, she was anti war during the clone wars, she was the mother of Luke and Leia, she was the entire reason anakin whent to the dark side.
4.Grievous is good at his role, beimg the last big separatist leader alive after dooku died, he is the big general, when he dies the war ends, that was his small role in the movies. He has a lot more character outside the movies, but we are talking about the films. Dooku on the other hand has a lot more character, he revolted against the hypocrisy of the jedis, he did have some good intentions, but he was mainly puppeted (and discarded) by palpatine, he is good at his job as being the one substitued by anakin, and like grievous, he is more developed outside of the movies.
Indeed Obi wan and Qui gon are the best character. Maul haved one job and he did it well, killing qui gon, being killed by obi wan and substitued by Dookan, he was never supposed to stay, and he was never supposed to be Obi wan main rival. And obi did his the job he was supposed to do, take care of anakin, and when he did not, he discovered an entire army, and started the war by accident, by being captured.
The entire thing of the og trilogy was an rebellion fighting an fascist imperialist goverment, please stop with this “muh politics” thing, you are an ML for fuck sake, and there is less of 10 minutes of mainly political scenes on the prequels, literally nothing, and there is a lot more action scenes then the originals.
Bruh there is an span of more then 10 years between the the 1 and the 3 movie, how cant you see the progress of it? Its literally there! And it continues on the og series, if you think that TPM anakin is the same as TROTS anakin, you did not watch the movie well enough.
Sorry for the massive rant, i just am really sad to be the only one here with an actually critical view of the trilogy, i just think most things you said where just lazy an regurgitated from channels ruled by neckbearded manchldren angry that the sci fi series from half a century ago are not the exactly same as the prequels of it. Also the prequels are more famous on Russia and China.
You’re entitled to your wrong opinion. I would rather watch paint dry for 2 hours, than an annoying, angsty, whiny alt-right teen ( openly expressing fascist sympathies ), who ends up becoming a mass murderer and a woman-killer. There are some redeemable things about the prequels, but the unlikeable main character of the prequels isn’t one of them.
I agree with you on everything, the prequel trilogy is superior, it has more depth and it is literally a tragedy (Oedipus Rex) but with its own universe, except on Jar Jar. C3PO is fun and its jokes are good, Jar Jar is just lame comic relief, and as you pointed out if C3PO already accomplished that role, why add a second character who does the same.
General grievous, count dooku, and the other minor villains are decent, but only interesting because of surface level things about them… oooh he can hold 4 lightsabers at once, or he trained qui gonn!.
Count Dooku is actually one of the more interesting villains in the entire SW. Or at least would be if they focused on his original ideas instead of the classical “i met a suspicious figure in cloak, and wololo i’m now on the dark side” which is so depressingly common in SW.
I haven’t watched Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but in there and in some comic/books it is explained that Count Dooku actually never was a Sith, he simply grew apart from the Jedi Order because of the decisions they were taking, basically becoming a Shogunate in the Republic, which ended up being one of the cornerstones for the fall of it in the hands of the Empire. He allied with the Sith in order to transform the Jedi but it backfired him.

Yes, basically at some point just wololo as usual
