Unironically I think they could try to romanticize the cartels, or they will pretend they aren’t that big a problem. I could just be reaching blindly around honestly.

I mean, it is a fact that the drug cartels have been actively armed by the DEA and the US has flooded Mexico with weapons on various occasions. They hold control over a significant amount of mexican territory and have a lot of political and economic influence (they are a sort of pseudo fascist dual power). Most mexicans hate them but also fear them, so it would be the perfect point of entry for the US to meddle in mexican affairs. The cartels are already romabticized in pop culture both in the US and Mexico with tv series, songs and the like.

I remember how about ten years ago, Mexican police started finding American automatic weapons – complete with serial numbers – on dead cartel members. The response of the Obama administration was “whoops, that was actually part of a super-secret plan to find out where the drug lords get their weapons.” Yeah, right.

Have you seen how many narco movies/TV shows the West makes? It’s almost like a fetish.

They’re also boring to watch because they’re formulaic AF. Once you’ve seen one series, you’ve basically seen all of them.
