For years I heard other Marxists say that most liberals – when you really get down to it – think fascism is a whole lot better than communism, and will always sympathize with fascism when a crisis arises. Part of me never really believed it.

Now I’m seeing that it’s true.

It’s not too hard to imagine when you’re in this part of the world. It’s part of the state ideology to downplay the Holocaust, and yell “but the commies!! They stole my grandpa’s toothbrush!! The fascists we were allied with never did that!!”

Yes, I suppose my Americ*n is showing here. We’re told pretty much from birth how great the US was in World War II, and how we “singlehandedly” beat the Axis. (Most Americans – no joke – think that Stalingrad was just a minor battle somewhere “out east,” also that we “saved the world” by dropping the atom bomb). It’s crazy to see the complete liberal about-face with Ukraine.

Here in Romania, WW2 is very barely touched upon. We start off by drawing that good old false equivalence between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany.

Followed of course by “but we had to ally with the Nazis, those evil Soviets took our land! (so did the Axis, but nevermind that)”

And of course also by mentioning the Holocaust, and then completely pretending we never participated in it.

And also, “our leader wasn’t a fascist!! I mean, yes, he allied the country with the Nazis, but something-something soldier’s honour blah blah clean Wehrmacht myth Romanian edition”
