I finally got around to reading that Esperanza article I see shared here a lot and it was enlightening, but there are some ridiculous hot takes in the comments.

Remember guys, if you ever feel bad and stupid after having a hot take, you will at least never have take as hot as “slavery being socialist resolution to exploitation and commodification”.

However, if you replace “male” with “American ruling class” and “sex” with “need to exploit captive markets,” a whole lot of this document starts making sense

So his issue with sex work is that prostitutes are getting paid and not that people in desperation have to have sex with people they don’t want to in order to survive.

They seem like they are frustrated at the cost of hiring a prostitute more than any humane concern.

Hazlit 00• over 2 years ago If capitalism and hierarchy cannot be abolished (and I don’t believe they can), what are we to do? I agree with all that you say with a few exceptions. I believe you fail to understand the power of the male sex drive. Some number of men will do anything for sex with a real live person. This includes paying unfortunately. Banning prostitution only reduces the availability of sex and therefore increases the exploitation of women. The true solution to ending sex work is beneficial for men and unpleasant for women: offering sex for free. When the supply of sex is greater than the demand for it there will be no reason left to exploit women. The woman as commodity–ever unavailable and unobtainable–will disappear. Understanding sex as an economic transaction in supply-demand terms, but taking the money out it is the true socialist solution to prostitution.
