The lives of all those who lay down arms from 06:00 Moscow time will be spared

    […]

the militants offering resistence are in a hopeless situation, practically without food and water. They yrge permission to lay down arms and surrender from the Kiev authorities. Meanwhile, representatives of the Kiev authorities categorically forbid them to do this and threaten with subsequent executions under the ‘wartime’ conditions.

So what I’m hearing, from a Western news outlet no less, is that Russia treats POWs way more reasonably than Ukraine treats its own fighters.

Wait, isn’t Russia supposed to be the evil one here? That’s what Daddy Sam tells me!

This is usually the case in war, the attacker makes an offer to the defender in a last resort situation that they can’t refuse. It avoids an unnecessary battle and especially as the defender is already a foot in the grave, what do they have to lose by fighting?

Russia is leaving out the rest obviously, that they will be taken as prisoners and can be tried for crimes of which plenty happened in Mariupol…

Conversely the defender does not want their troops to surrender and can only offer one thing: death at a later date. So either you fight now and might survive, or we execute you later and you will surely die.

The extent to which both will keep to their word is debateable. I wouldn’t put it past Ukraine to execute soldiers for not obeying orders, but that is technically illegal. It might just be an empty threat.

I don’t know why they wait to get permission though lol, just surrender.
