I’ve been playing Deus Ex and I’m angry they keep calling me he despite there’s no female character option

I just avoid not playing as female protagonists as a preference & it solves that issue but it sucks to miss out on some games at times

I mean, there are times when you need to be in other person’s feet. Like you can’t be something that’s not Niko Bellic (just to name any user playable character) because it’s related to the identity of the character and how it relates to the story and narrative. But I agree when this isn’t important it’s shitty not having an option.

That’s true, it sometimes sensibly is the time to play that kind of role and beat baddies up. I’m fine with GTA games since I can perceive the story at large without having to connect to the character so much; but when there’s a choice, having a female protagonist is much more fun.

Yeah, or when the character doesn’t have a personality, for example in Pokemon games, the character is a vessel and its identity doesn’t matter since it is so unidimensional. The more rare cases are things like Gordon Freeman where you need to impersonate him and you have your own version of him, but still the game provides some background on what kind of person he is which you need to use in order to create the version of Freeman you want to be. This is what makes Freeman’s Mind so great, IMO, because it shows explicitly this; and it makes it such a beautiful game.
