Might be a bunch of younger guys who grew up immersed in gamergate rhetoric and learned the lines without knowing the context.

That’s 100% what it is. Guided by the “””thought””” leaders, 90s nerds who are angry that their invented memory of “back in the day gaming was only for basement dwelling white losers like myself,” (which was never true lol). It’s gatekeeping plus bigotry. What a lovely combination.

Same shit is happening with Warhammer and I presume any traditionally “nerd” culture that is becoming more mainstream than it once was. These people have their entire identity wrapped up in what essentially boils down to a fucking hobby of some kind, and are so fragile that somehow they see that hobby (read as: their entire pathetic sense of self) as threatened by outsiders because… reasons.

Sometimes I write down entire comments that I’ll save, and not post, but seeing that your comment is very close to some thoughts I’ve had on this matter, it’s time to share it. This was on the topic of ‘‘Geek’’:

The problem with capital G gamers is that they’ve made gaming their identity. What you called ‘‘Geek’’. Geek is a consumer product. How do you become more Geeky? By consuming media. Do you see what I’m getting at? If you base your self around an identity that is not rooted in reality, but on the consumption of fiction…what do you have?

The nature of capitalism is that class solidarity is going to be hollowed out and replaced by consumption instead.

Building community spaces so people can “go outside” (“touch grass” etc) and exist in the physical world is revolutionary praxis in the current stage, IMO. Not saying it’s top tier shit, but so many people are wondering “organize? What’s that? PSL/DSA/start a union? Too difficult/not practical for me”

"Meet your neighbors, invest in your public spaces and urban environments " are adequate starting points, in my opinion.

I’m offering a 1 week package to any Ubisoft game, the tour comes with complaining about black people, bemoaning that Lara Croft is a lesbian, and for an extra $90 you can pretend to have been a fan since day one.

Reminds me of this tweet regarding Luffy’s outfits pre and post time skip. He’s obviously more fashionable in the latter. Then someone tweets “2 years on an island of women changed a broke removed’s life”

If that picture is any indication, in 2004 their asses did not know how to draw black hair. Didn’t really hit the mark for soft facial features. It’s not just that the polygon count went up, but they can express blackness and femininity in a way that isn’t simple reskin or sex-forwardness. Which is to say that I think if they knew better they could have done better in the same technical and time-bound constraints.

Can they do sex-forwardness? I’m sure. In fact, I bet it’s there when the premise of the game is “fairytale ending not guaranteed.” But sex-forwardness is now on a separate axis than gender or race and that’s good for everyone. If you didn’t retreat into hate you could even express “I want a piece of media that is more tantalizing.” To which many people will oblige you. Whether or not there’s enough sex in the game, whether or not quirk-chungus dialogue ruins it, whether or not it’s safe corporate slop, whether or not they tokenize minorities, whether it’s a financial success or failure, and ultimately whether it’s fun or not is independent of expressing blackness and femininity in a way that is superior to how it was.

I think it’s a strict upgrade because even if you made a game with all the sensibilities that these gamers desire, but you put expressed these things differently, you’d still get a bit more agency out of the cast if women. If she’s Tsunade-mode, a healer who’s chested up to 11 in high heels, then it’s because she chose the outfit, you know? Someone didn’t choose the outfit even if it’s just because she’s the sister or childhood friend.

Honestly I’m at the stage where I almost just pity these pathetic losers that have devoted their entire identity to doing “anti-woke” analysis on video games. Like what a waste of a human life and intellect.

My favourite/the worst one I’ve seen was the furore around Aphrodite looking “too masculine” in Hades 2. “Oh they’ve gone woke, they’ve made her manly, she looks trans”.

We’re talking about a cohort of people spending their days obsessing over a drawn image of a fictional video game character based on a fictional deity. Can you imagine anything less important to politics, daily life, or reality? I’m so tired of culture war, boss.

Oh and btw this is “masculine” design of Aphrodite (slightly NSFW I guess):

Ah yes very masc looking, it must be the giant tits :agony: fmd these people

I think what jars me here is the hairstyle on the left. That’s really close to my hairstyle and it’s a fair bit of maintenance and product, where most of the hairstyles of people in games like these seems more simple and lo-maint (I don’t know this characters backgrpund, but she doesnt seem dressed as nobility). It’s also more of a modern style. Fable is medievalesque, yeah? Would have been cool to see some period hairstyles for that sort of curl

if they’re the same character she’s your childhood friend from a little village, and i don’t remember if her dad was posh or not. i wonder if that’s just the hairstlye the voice or mocap actress had?

also, inb4 another killmonger because they don’t have period hair styles.
