they said that in communism you’d have to give your toothbrush, but in capitalism you’ll have a hacked toothbrush and you’re gonna enjoy it!

You cannot convince me that there is any reason to put a computer in a toothbrush. The fact that we have electric toothbrushes at all is borderline absurd.

I’m not opposed to an electric toothbrush, but that should be the end of it. We did it! We made sci-fi toothbrushes! Let’s pat ourselves on the back for achieving the pinnacle of teeth-cleaning technology, not piss in God’s face by demanding that it also have a WiFi connection and an app and a subscription service.

For smart brushes in particular- no way they’re not spying the hell out of their customers. Just like smart TVs, smart home setups, etc.

Elon Musk has the right idea, honestly. Just put the chips directly into our brains instead of trying to sneak monitoring devices into every home appliance like we’re in an outlandish parody of a Cold War spy film.

I disagree. Electric toothbrushes are an effective way to increase the efficiency of dental hygeine. Maintaining dental health is of critical importance for both individuals and societies, so it is well-worth investment. Like others have said, wireless connectivity is unnecessary though.

Wireless connectivity and an app could be leveraged to:

        • help you track how frequently you and/or your children brush your teeth
        • to get reminders only if you didn’t already brush your teeth
        • in tandem with pressure sensors, to inform you if you’re brushing too hard

Of those features, only the second one would require the toothbrush to have wifi access - the others could use bluetooth. That same feature could also be developed without using wifi if it was integrated with a smart home system like Zigbee, but would then require a hub and existing infrastructure on the part of customers to function.

I’d like to have my electric toothbrush vibrate a song into my teeth. A song of my choosing from my home server in my house. I’d like to be made with open source software and ssh into it with eliptical keys and no passwords.

That’s not the only place it can vibrate a song into.

Vibrators, studfinders and prescription glasses too. Why not?
