Indeed, the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) actively appealed to patriotism and nationalism, by invoking historical spanish figures such as “El Empecinado”, hero of the spanish war of independence against Napoleon in the 1800s, in order to rally the masses against fascism. The Civil War was a patriotic struggle for independence and democracy, against Axis backed fascists.
