Federation means that different Lemmy instances can now communicate with each other, so if you have an account on one you’d be able to see content from other Lemmy instances that the administrators of your instance choose to federate with.
Internet of Things is different. It refers to electronic devices being connected to the internet so they can communicate via a central hub (like Amazon’s Alexa). Like you can have smart lights in your home that are connected to the internet. So you can use a phone app to control them (turn them off, change brightness or colour, etc.). And you can do this while you are away from home too because they are connected to the internet. This is why it’s called the internet of things.
yeah but it’s not centralised. like in IoT, all electronics communicate with the central server (like Amazon’s or Google’s depending on how you’ve set it up). but in federation, the instances communicate with each other.
Well done!
I have to admit though: while I was reading this, I was lacking in basic information.
What exactly is Federation? Just give me a quick rundown. I’m sure I’ll understand it.

Thanks for the explanation!

Oh, I get it; it just means that these so-called “instances” are connected to each other, like an “Internet of Things.”

Oh yes, I know, I just meant that “Federation” is sort of like that except it’s different websites communicating with each other.

So it’s more equal. Gotcha.
Email is the most used federated system. Gmail can go to Yahoo Mail or Hotmail with no problem
Ah, I see.
Here’s a good vid on it.
