Absolutely, yeah, I extend this to Nazis. You’re not gonna catch me shedding any tears over dead nazis, but executing prisoners in the name of revenge is still the wrong choice. Imprisonment and execution should be done pragmatically, not to satisfy one’s bloodlust. People should be imprisoned if they would otherwise be likely to harm innocent people. They should be executed if the former is true, and imprisonment is simply not an option. People should be released from whatever imprisonment they are in at the very moment it can be reasonably believed that they no longer pose a threat to innocent people. Any time someone spends in prison should be dedicated to, as efficiently as possible, rehabilitating them so that they will stop being a threat to innocent people as soon as possible.

True injustice is wasting time, energy, and resources which could be used to help people in the name of revenge.

  • He risked his life fighting fascists, which is cool. He came away from the conflict with the opinion that “communists are just as bad” which is dumb, though considering the sectarian violence he experienced while trying to fight fascists, it can kind of be understood how he’d come away with that opinion. Doesn’t excuse it of course, and it certainly doesn’t excuse the fact that he only ever criticized communists from that point onward.

His fiction writing sucks ass, not exclusively for the anti-communist messaging.

On a personal level he was shit, possibly an attempted rapist (haven’t read up on that accusation too well, but i can believe it), homophobic, and racist.

So in short, he sucked, but I guess not as bad as he could’ve sucked. Not exactly a high bar to clear.

  • I imagine a similar situation was happening in China because when you live in a particular system you tend to take it for granted

I’ve got a Chinese friend and this is kinda the impression I got talking to her about socialism. She was surprised to learn I was interested in socialism, but also didn’t really have much of an opinion on it or the Chinese government or any of that stuff, cause it’s just not something she’s thought about that much. Something she was taught about in school and then moved on from.
