Why on Earth is Mao being combined with the flag of Imperial Japan? Am I missing key context where this isn’t actually referencing Imperial Japan?
(probably over-)charitable interpretation: referencing Red Sun in the Sky but is ignorant of the imperial japanese flag maybe?
Seems odd to be aware of one but not the other, IMO.
yeah, it is certainly a very weird choice whatever the explanation is
I honestly don’t know. I was wondering the same thing. The exhibit had a sheet of paper explaining each of the pieces that I wish I photographed, from what I remember of it I think the artist thinks that Mao collaborated with the Japanese for some reason. I’m attending a talk by the curator of the event tomorrow so I’ll try to find out more.
Please update us! I’m super curious.

Oh i see where the artist is coming from
Horseshoe theory with orientalist characteristics.
The “sun” of the imperial Japanese flag is slightly off center toward the flag pole, this one appear centered as far as I can tell despite all of the folds. So I’d say this is unrelated, probably.
Whoever came up with this abomination needs re-education.
