The position, that state and church should be divided, while also everyone should have the right to believe whatever they like, is something from the classic liberalism. Not what you have now, but the kind of liberalism which was on the rise, when also the bourgeoisie got more and more influence. I guess it is understandable what I try to say.
It was also common to say by the german communists after the second world war, that it would be the communists who would defend the basic bourgeois rights (freedom of speach, freedom of arts, freedom of press, freedom of religion etc.), while the bourgeoisie would attack it constantly.
