I didn’t realise SH was still copyrighted! I can’t believe all those remakes and extra novels have been made under copyright.

On the one hand, the estate has been crafty selling the rights for both both the Robert Downey Jr and Benedict Cumberbatch versions knowing the works would become public domain so soon. On the other hand, I bet the studios were glad to be sure of minimal competition for those releases.

I wonder what the situation is with Enola Holmes? Because they’ve not long made two films about her, based on books. I wonder if that author had to get permission from ACD’s estate, too?

How long will it be until the superior character Herlock Sholmes becomes public domain too?

Classic character, well known, loved, and revered. He’s had a good run under the constraints of capital and deserves to be owned by the people now. It should have happened earlier.

I really hope they don’t pull a Disney and get lawyers to extend their copyright by outright making “adjustments” to the copyright law.

There is not enough money in this IP for that. Although entire IP mafia might want to just cancel that entire “entering public domain” because even almost 100 years is unacceptable to them.

Soon, we’ll get a Sherlock Holmes movie just like that upcoming Winnie the Pooh one.
