What’s it called when backwards regimes do this “progressive” type shit all while actively commiting slavery, genocide, abuse of human rights and freedoms?

Not pink washing or sports washing, this is one is slightly different.

This is just catering to the western audience.

I would like more info on the social reforms.

To me, an atheist, commodification of women through these fashion shows is not a step towards women emancipation, and framing it as such like in this article is obvious catering to the West.

These shows are not about fashion or womens rights, they are done to establish political links between wealthy families, these are daughter auctions for the wealthy.

As someone with friends in Saudi Arabia, these reforms are not well received by the population. The only reason you don’t see anyone doing anything or saying anything against these reforms is the same reason you don’t see people protesting for Palestine: There is no free speech in SA. The government bans protests and has heavy surveillance in places like mosques, libraries, schools, and universities and public spaces in general.

This is just west washing their crimes.

Agreed, tho i would phrase it as small concessions to appease the people from the west.

Putting myself on the shoes of an avg arab woman, i would feel insulted about this article.

Yeah it’s definitely insulting, especially after throwing Saudi women in jail for their own activism and feminism.

Also from indigenous tribes your government is trying to genocide.

Also from Palestinians who are bearing the brunt of SA’s “normalization” with the Zionist entity.

Also from Arabs who are tired of SA arming terrorists and destabilizing the middle east.

I could continue; but everyone else gets the point, not sure if you get it.

Prince Mohammed bin Salman has initiated a series of dramatic social reforms in a bid to soften Saudi Arabia’s austere image.

I smell a tiny contradiction here.

Well, at least it’s somewhat of a change? It doesn’t make the situation in SA much better but it’s a bit surprising still.
