Saudi Arabia held its first fashion show featuring swimsuit models on Friday, an envelope-pushing step in a country where less than a decade ago women were..
Nah, this is just them trying to take eyes off of their genocides against indigenous tribes in Saudi Arabia. They’re taking land that belongs to various indigenous tribes so they can make their “neom” thing.
In addition to the genocide they committed against yemen.
This is off topic. If this was a post about a fashion show anywhere else you probably wouldn’t have mentioned all the bad news about it. But I do wonder what is the community’s opinion on eminent domain. As for “genocides against indigenous tribes in Saudi Arabia”, that’s just absurd.
The law reforms, the openness for tourism -before 2019 tourists weren’t allowed- are changes are for the best, and have helped employ more people and increase the non-oil GDP to 50%, but I wonder if there is some bread and circuses to it. With the genocide in Gaza the timing of this fashion show shows a disregard for the suffering.
As for swimsuits they remain illegal except in private beaches and resorts, which have existed for years given the significant foreign population in Saudi Arabia. I don’t think they are legal to wear in public beaches yet. This event is on a private resort.
Saudi Arabia committed a genocide against yemen and is currently commiting a genocide against indigenous groups. Aside from Israel, who else is doing what Saudi Arabia is doing? Who else is backed by the US? We have the freedom to criticize despotic regimes, if it bothers you so much you can join Israelis and ask them for tips on how to silence others.
Well, at least it’s somewhat of a change? It doesn’t make the situation in SA much better but it’s a bit surprising still.

Fair enough

In the past few years quite a number of social reforms have taken place specially for women
