Minsk, Dec 16 (Prensa Latina) Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko stated on Tuesday that a US military aggression against Venezuela could become a “second Vietnam” for Washington.

“I am absolutely convinced that all issues and all desires of the United States can be currently resolved peacefully, because a war will lead nowhere.

Yesterday I spoke with US Special Envoy to Belarus, John Coale, and I told him that this may turn into second Vietnam,” Lukashenko said in an interview to Newsmax TV.

The president warned that the Venezuelan people will unite around President Nicolas Maduro if Washington attacks the Latin American country.

Trump warned on November 29 that the airspace over Venezuela and its surrounding areas should be considered “completely closed” to “airlines, drug traffickers, and human traffickers.”

The Venezuelan government, in turn, asserted that it will continue to exercise fully its sovereignty, which is “protected by international law throughout its airspace.”

This measure comes amid escalating tensions between the two countries, along with reports of Trump’s plans to order a ground military operation in Venezuela.

Whats even more bewildering to me is the mass support that the US seems to have for intervention in South America

For the case of Venezuela, there is no mass support. On the contrary, there is mass support against military action toward Venezuela. This is shown in polls from CBS and Yougov:

This is a genuine opportunity for comrades agitating to create anti war sentiment in the US.

Support for attacking Venezuela is very unpopular here in the States. Comrades here are doing great work trying to agitate against this.

It’s pretty antiwar already, on mainstream Lemmy and IRL around me, except for the richer WASPs and Breitbart racists, even normal racists seem adverse, at least where I am.

Thanks for that source, I meant more for the surrounding countries - I suspect its to do with the ideological state apparatus of the fascist countries in power, and the cynic in me says that the recent far-right wave sweeping South America has been heavily manufactured by the US to prevent any sort of South American co-ordinated response to this.

For the other countries, they don’t need that dehumanizing/pro-war propaganda that they are using against Venezuela because they still have assets and working strategies in those places.

And you are right that it is heavily manufactured. As proof, Trump helped Milei’s recent parliamentary elections by threatening like a mafia boss to retain aid to Argentina. There are more examples of covert or overt US aid for the rest of the right wing regimes in blue.

That’s why I always insist to work in cultivating solidarity. We are starving for solidarity worldwide against the constant push from the imperialist to dehumanize the oppressed.
