This is true for that era, from the late 70s to even the early 2010s there was a lot of violent crime with a tonne of violent serial killers, human traffickers, bandits and cartel-esque gangs. The heavy crackdown on guns kicking up in the late 90s as well.
Probably why our family kept their eye on the kids as the threat of them getting trafficked was real.
