Ya… problem is all the self-hosted good ones like peertube require a ton of storage space, and quickly get really expensive.

      :(

Though, could we use donations to manage the server upkeep? I’ve seen some websites, especially removedute to do it1; and the deprogram trio2 often ask for viewers to support them on Patreon; and they seem to earn a lot from it too.

1 - Though I feel like removedute might have some secret financial backings behind the scenes, Right-wing places are known to get massive backings after all.

2 - I know they’re a podcast and LeftTubers, but I thought of mentioning them since they - especially the Podcast - gets a lot on Patreon.

Even with donations, you just can’t scale a single server to host thousands of videos… pretty much only native torrents solve that issue. IMO the ideal video sharing platform hasn’t been made yet. It needs to :

        • Offload all hosting of actual video content onto torrents created by the uploaders.
          • The web client should only use a temporary cache to stream the videos, but prefer and ask people to install either a torrent client, or a browser-based torrent plugin that can stream the torrents.
        • Have a really nice UI, made specifically for videos.
