I vaguely recall from Isaac Deutscher’s book on Trotsky (the first volume) that the Soviets withdrew from the fighting in WWI. Promising withdrawal was one of the reasons for the first revolution.

    Is that right?

If so, that doesn’t sound like ‘defeat’ in the same way as, say, Nazi Germany was later defeated in WWII.

After the February Revolution, the new provisional government has signed a peace treaty outside of the Entente (separate peace I think is the term). However, the terms of the treaty were quite horrendous and caused a substantial loss of territory, among other things.
