One of the best, most comprehensive books on Stalin is Domenico Losurdo’s “Stalin: The History and Critique of a Black Legend”:

There is also a very short little book written by a guy named A.T. Rybin called “Next to Stalin: Notes of a Bodyguard” that is mostly personal vigniettes rather than big picture stuff:

And of course if you’re interested in books and articles on particular, specific topics related to the Stalin era you can read Grover Furr’s works. Furr draws from primary sources but also cites plenty of historians who are very much not fans of Stalin yet come to conclusions that contradict a lot of the typical anti-Stalin propaganda we are all familiar with.
