Vladimir Putin just announced that Azovstal will not be stormed in order to save russian lives. Instead, a total blockade of Azovstal and its underground tunnel system will be imposed. Bombing of the complex will still continue though. Now the nazis will have to choose between surrendering or starving to death. Putin also announced the total liberation of Mariupol (except for Azovstal) and said all soldiers who participated in its liberation would be awarded for heroism. He also said April 21 will be from now on the date of the Second Liberation of Mariupol.
UPDATE: Russian forces have taken control of the ground level part of Azovstal. Only the tunnels remain out of control. Azov is blocked underground.
Not to rejoice over the loss of human life or anything, but there’s something almost poetic about this. Think about it: Gorbachev’s betrayal puts Azovstal, the massive iron and steel plant built by Soviet power, into the hands of private capital. But the blood, sweat, and tears of the workers who raised the facility cries out for vengeance, and the old plant, trampled on and desecrated, manages to deliver one last blow: it dies, and in dying becomes a grave for fascists.
