Months ago, before I became completely destitute, I ordered a good supply of sanitary items off amazon. They were so badly packaged that they arrived damaged and very unsanitary. I complained on amazon’s live chat and they said they’d refund and not to bother sending them back.

Today, months later, when I have no income and a maxxed out overdraft, amazon debited my account £35, and sent me an email saying it’s because I didn’t send the product back. This is extremely stressful with the financial situation I’m in. I went back on their live chat and explained the situation, and eventually they said they’d refund me.

Then they said that they were trying to refund me but it wasn’t working so they have no option but to refund me in the form of an amazon gift card. This seems scammy to me, but what could I do but accept? Even though this will cost me more in overdraft charges.

Why does life always have to suck so hard? Every day there is another new and horrible problem to deal with.

    amazon debited my account £35

You should have tried complaining to your bank. It might be too late now, but banks usually side with their own customers rather than 3rd parties and then they figure it out later. For example, you could have sent the bank a screenshot of the chat where it says they would refund you. If they didn’t send a receipt or invoice or anything for the newly-debited £35 it’s pretty much a scam and the bank would see it that way too, I’m sure.

I assumed there must be something in the small print allowing them to do it, but I will check with the bank.

    Fucking wankers.

Amazon runs loads of scams, you’re not wrong. The repeat order button is ticked automatically even if you click one-time purchase and even if it’s something that you won’t need to keep buying monthly. You’ve got to be so careful on there.

It’s practically impossible to buy something without getting tricked into a prime subscription–and the mfs have a box ticked as standard that says they can deduct the fee from gift card balances. I always suspected they would then try to lure people into holding gift cards as if it was cash. I think I might be right.

You could probably get your money back if you cited the right legislation but now that you’ve accepted gift cards, it might be harder. They’ll do everything they can to delay things and fuck you around. The initial problem is always that it’s also practically impossible to talk to someone or even write a letter to keep a record of what’s said. They know full fucking well what they’re doing.

Now you’ve got to be very, very careful not to sign up to prime or any other Amazon service until you’ve spent your gift card. Otherwise, they might deduct fees from your balance and your unlikely to get it back.

Hope you can at least spend the $35 without hassle.
