In 1949, all U.S. documentation on the Korean War was classified top secret for a period of 50 years. Coincidentally, in 1997, just before the deadline was reached, South Korea elected its first democratic government. Both these events played their part.
Nobody much was interested in the west—a few Asian scholars. But in South Korea there was great interest, and many revelations, and some trickled westward from there…
