The dishwashers video made my family fall in love with this guy, and now we’re watching random videos a few nights a week. We love his cheeky nerdy vibe, he’s so much fun. Really excited to hear what he has to say about awnings!

In Australia window shading by either eaves or awnings is required for every new build. There’s government regulations to make sure a certain level of energy efficiency is met before you get approval to build.

I know the vid is about awnings but he also mentions wrap around porches and balconies which not only provide shade for the windows but also from the thermal mass of the structure.

My grandparents old house got sold and it was a weirdly high house with a roomy cellar, the front entry was up a set of stairs and then past a living room sized covered porch. It was sooo nice. The practicality is cool as well, but it was also just a really nice place to vibe. It got torn off

i have an old house, almost 100 years old. Ive thought about getting awnings because the insulation isnt great and i was looking for anything to keep the house cool. I wasnt sure it would be worth it, since i have low e glass that does pretty well already.

I love the guy and the technology aspect of it all but I cringe when he goes on about energy savings. Doesn’t matter how much water the dishwasher is using or if he’s running the heat-pump to cool his house during the day.

The only true energy saving hack is not living in a giant fucking house to begin with, not filling it with appliances and crap, not driving a car to and from. Simple not eating meat is probably a bigger energy saver than most of these “hacks”.

What we need is a technology revolutions channel, where he talks about the thermal mass of an earth-ship, harvesting rainwater and repurposing grey water, growing beans on meager soil, how to quad-copter and radio communications, the efficiency of a bicycle chain vs belt drive and small scale agricultural machinery from japan.

Ok but he literally doesn’t run the AC during the day, he did a whole video on it which he alluded to in this one where he explains that he overcools his house at night so it’s tolerable by the end of the day. Also he lives in a townhouse, which he said in the video as well.

That was something I noticed about Athens when I visited. Almost everyone has a little balcony and an awning they can use to ward off the heat, even in the bigger residential buildings.
