Jbkempf, the main developer of VLC/creator of VideoLAN, has previously refused an offer in tens of millions of euro to put ads in VLC. In my opinion it’s one of the best pieces of open source software, period.

Mpv is quite nice too but vlc has the reliability factor, it’s been around for a while and probably is gonna be around for quite some time

Not really sure if that applies here. Mpv is more than 10 years old at this point. I really wouldn’t worry about it going away any time soon.

VLC is still older I think it’s more reliable, but you are right in the sense that after some time the difference gets smaller

I used VLC when I still used Windows, but after moving to Linux some years ago I had constant trouble with it, only one or two years ago I discovered Haruna and I think it is nearly perfect, the only thing I miss from VLC is being able to download subtitles directly from the player.

I believe there’s an upcoming massive overhaul of the UI/UX if one installs the latest git version, and I really hate it as it oversimplifies and hides a lot of buttons. I hope the developers will maintain the classic theme in the future because I depend on VLC and have built a lot of muscle memory with its current UI. I like VLC for being a power user tool, not yet another pretty but limited interface.

Here’s the git version of vlc (4.0) on my machine:

Note I have themed my machine with a customized Iosevka font.

It does look like it has a powerful interface customizer, so maybe I could replicate the old style that I prefer.
