What are some good documentaries to check out? What somewhat-short books are good? I’d like to learn about the Martí to Castro period specifically, but anything you can send is wonderful. Thanks
Blowback podcast did a season about Cuba. Even if you don’t like listening to podcasts, it’s a good source for sources since they use sources that are critical of US imperialism.
Ah, alas I only started season 1, but I’m going through it kinda quickly, I’ll definitely check it out thanks
There’s Clifford L. Staten’s The History of Cuba.
http://libgen.rs/book/index.php?md5=DE11DAA6342FE92307FDE6B81E5FD1CFThe book starts with the anticommunist idea that Cuba is a repressive state which does not allow dissent and is constantly arresting its people (funny coming from a Statesian author, born in a country with the largest prison population per capita in the world). However, its research on Cuba is nonetheless valuable, and the author includes a lot of references to dig deeper into a particular study.
It does a good portrayal of the early history of Cuba, the US-backed Batista regime, the events leading up to the revolution, the revolution itself and the early Castro government. I cannot say anything about the Cold War period because I didn’t read it. The book doesn’t appear to have an anticommunist tendency besides the strange initial acknowledgements.
Cool I’ll read through the beginning with a discerning eye lol
