What are some good documentaries to check out? What somewhat-short books are good? I’d like to learn about the Martí to Castro period specifically, but anything you can send is wonderful. Thanks

There’s Clifford L. Staten’s The History of Cuba.

The book starts with the anticommunist idea that Cuba is a repressive state which does not allow dissent and is constantly arresting its people (funny coming from a Statesian author, born in a country with the largest prison population per capita in the world). However, its research on Cuba is nonetheless valuable, and the author includes a lot of references to dig deeper into a particular study.
It does a good portrayal of the early history of Cuba, the US-backed Batista regime, the events leading up to the revolution, the revolution itself and the early Castro government. I cannot say anything about the Cold War period because I didn’t read it. The book doesn’t appear to have an anticommunist tendency besides the strange initial acknowledgements.
Cool I’ll read through the beginning with a discerning eye lol
