So, like, I’m going to start Elden Ring today.

What should I know beforehand?

Always remember, that if you’re not up to the challenge and something feels a littlle bit too much - you can just sprint forward evading incoming attacks, collecting unique items and litting up bonef… Ahem, well, idk how they are called here, but you get the point.

This last months I’ve been on a simulator spree. Mostly DCS soviet modules. Been also thinking of returning to X-Plane 11, but on linux with amd the results are not optimal. I’m waiting anxiously for Xp12 though.

There’s some sort-of Soviet machinery simulator game or something?

Huum, for machinery you mean like farming? The closest I know is Workers and Resources Soviet Republic. Is like simcity and factorio got together. You must build up your city, but you can plan the economy and instead of outright buying stuff you gather the raw materials, refine them, then finaly build what you wanted. The supply chains are complex and it is in constant development. It is a great game.

I mentioned DCS which has soviet war planes to simulate. The Mig-21 is close to my heart. Also it has helicopters, the best some say, the Mi-8 being my favourite.

Over in X-plane, we have the fantastic Tu-154, by Felis. It is one of my favourite planes on the platform. Felis, the designer of these planes also made a very good An-24, and a Yak-40. These last ones are a little older but a joy to fly, plus they are free.

There is also a train simulator that I would love to try but haven’t got the patience to make it run on linux: MaSzyna. It is a polish train sim that seems to have great depth for the olden soviet locomotives.

If submarines are more your type, Dangerous Waters is a great subsim that has some cold war era soviet boats. The Kilo Class and the Akula Class are available. It is quite old though. A more modern rendition, yet less sim, more game is Cold Waters.

Don’t forget about Reinforce Alert for Dangerous Waters which widely enhances the game and Epic Mod for Cold Waters which makes it an actual sim.

Currently playing Gary Grigsby’s War In The East 2. I don’t have the computer for graphic intensive games (yet)…plus I’m not a Windows user so it needs to run well through Proton or a Windows VM.

I’m YouTubeing and Twitching my newbie playthrough if anyone’s interested.

Ever tried The Operational Art of War? Clearly not as good as Grigsby’s, but still a decent wargame which can emulate battles of any sizes and has like dozens community scenarios from WW1 to modern world.

I own it, but I’ve been so engrossed in this current campaign on WITE2 that I haven’t spent a lot of time with it. I hear great things so I’ll get on it soon(ish).

Ah slitherine, one can only dream of the day when they start publishing to Linux.

Btw, how’s GGWITE2 on proton? I had a decent interest in it, but never picked it up. Shadow Empire after some quick fixes worked very well, mostly bug free. For something lighter and more tatical than strategical I really love Pike and Shot campaings. This one works like a charm and is very fun.

A little screen flicker but never on the map and is not distracting at all. The launcher doesn’t do Linux pathing right so you have to delete the launcher.exe and symlink the game executable to it. It has so far only caused a problem with one update. Also, only proton 5.0-10 works.

I’ll be starting a War in the Pacific campaign once my WITE2 gets to December 8th. I have to run that on a Windows VM but it’s old so rund well.

War in the West works out of the box with Proton. I’ll start that in 1943 and play all three concurrently.

I also like RimWorld and Wildermyth, but don’t have the graphics card to stream them. They work well locally though.

I love Insurgency: Sandstorm as my go to shooter. Playing as some sandal wearing tracksuit arab rebel or as a government republican guard in a red beret, pretty atmospheric.

If you want to play as Commies

Men of War: Red Tide Rising Storm 2: Vietnam (Pick Vietnam) Tropico, even though its kind of mocking Cuba Hearts of Iron as the USSR

I really want to play it but it has some FPS bug for me where it goes to 15 FPS after 5 minutes of gameplay

I’ve been playing Elden Ring nonstop. It’s not perfect whatsoever, but I’m having fun still.

Risk of Rain 2’s expansion inspired me to go back to play the first game again, and damn is it hard. I’ve managed to grab two Monsoon victories (Miner and Sniper) in spite of that. The timer is definitely much more important in the first game, you’ve gotta stay on the move. It doesn’t help that a lot of the enemy patterns are hard to distinguish through all the pixelated noise.
