It’s not really that fucked up, it’s just a game. Silent Hunter 3 is the same thing. And in that game there’s nothing political at all, you just captain a submarine. Silent Hunter 4 (or 5 I can’t remember) has you playing an American sub captain and doing the same thing in the Pacific. Just a game.
It’s a fun game tho, tbh. I played a little bit of it.
It’s only Uboats because that’s the only sub of WWII that people care about, and the concept of a WWII sub sim is interesting. You only shoot at military targets, to my understanding it’s pretty much just British warships, and makes no commentary on or glorification of the politics of the german side of the war.
A lot of the game is in crew management and course-plotting, if you’re a submarine enthusiast then it’s highly reccomended. As far as I know, it’s the only submarine sim that goes to this level of detail.
I would still feel a little uneasy if the simulator simply omitted all traces of the Axis’s naval atrocities (and there were more than a few). I can understand why the authors would feel queasy about adding something like that, but I would expect that feature if they were serious about making an accurate simulator.
I don’t hate the very concept of temporarily playing as an oppressor, but it’s one of those things that’s all too easy to execute improperly.
