Reminds me of a conversation I had with a basically apolitical friend some years ago:
Friend: “Man, going to the moon was such an awesome American moment. I wish we could do that again.”
Me: “Yeah, though there are about two million other things we could be spending that money on…”
Friend: “I get you, but our government’s going to waste the money anyway, and I’d rather they’d pour it into a hole on the moon than use it to kill people in Iraq.”
