Yeah he had a choice. Do nothing and have US bases, next door, on the historical invasion route into Russia, or push back. He tried diplomacy for several years and extended his arms in friendship towards the west for even longer. Neither worked. Putin isn’t stupid, he saw the writing at the wall and eventually prepared accordingly.
