Washington, Nov 26 (EFE) - US President Donald Trump on Wednesday urged Hondurans to support the conservative National Party candidate, Nasry Asfura, in the November 30 elections, and accused his rivals of representing the “advance of communism” and being allied with leaders like Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro.
In a post on his Truth Social account, the president referred to Asfura as the “only true friend of freedom in Honduras” and added that they could “work together to fight the narco-communists.”
Trump said that the ruling party’s candidate, Rixi Moncada, who aspires to succeed the current president, Xiomara Castro, is “close to communism” and added that the third candidate, Salvador Nasralla, is part of an attempt to “deceive the people” in order to split the vote.
The president praised Asfura’s past as mayor of the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa, where in his opinion he helped “bring water to millions of people.”
One day before Trump’s endorsement of the conservative candidate, Under Secretary of State Christopher Landau urged members of the Organization of American States (OAS) to demand an electoral process free of intimidation, fraud and political interference in Honduras, ahead of the general elections next Sunday.
The electoral process is being questioned due to allegations of fraud between the ruling party and the opposition, stemming from the alleged interference of the Prosecutor’s Office in opening investigations against high electoral authorities or the interference of the Armed Forces.
In his message, Trump questioned whether “narco-terrorists” like Maduro would take over other countries as they did with Venezuela or Cuba, referring to the candidates competing against Asfura.
Asfura, a businessman and right-wing candidate, is competing against Rixi Moncada, the candidate of the leftist Libre party, and news anchor Salvador Nasralla, who, despite having a right-wing discourse and leading the Liberal Party, does not have the support of Washington.
The Honduran Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Armed Forces are two of the most questioned institutions in the current electoral process due to threats from the former to imprison electoral officials, and due to the interference of the military in matters that fall under the jurisdiction of the National Electoral Council (CNE).
The winner of the election will replace President Xiomara Castro, who for the past three years has kept Honduras under a state of emergency with various constitutional rights restricted and has been criticized for the increase in violence and corruption.

Despite these challenges, what progress has the Government made in countering these actions and consolidating its project?
The government has gradually created a favorable atmosphere through policies aimed at historically excluded sectors: Indigenous peoples and women . Improvements have been implemented in education and health, with eight hospitals under construction, in addition to various projects and initiatives that support a political process seeking to reverse neoliberal policies.
Does this imply deepening the changes already underway or consolidating what has already been achieved?
The goal is to go deeper. It’s important to remember that the fight has been focused in Congress against the legislation left behind by the narco-dictatorship. Therefore, achieving a favorable balance of power in parliament is necessary to advance this transformation process .
The central focus is the democratization of the economy . This policy entails a basic law: the law of tax justice, which eliminates tax exemptions for privileged groups who, under the logic of neoliberalism, did not pay taxes and enriched a select few.
Other actions include the recovery of territorial sovereignty, the restitution of the rights of indigenous peoples whose lands have been usurped, and the defense of workers’ rights. Progress has also been made in reversing the privatization of state-owned enterprises , gradually recovering the electric power company and other entities.
There are strategic projects like the interoceanic railway , which would improve the country’s economic conditions and open new markets, and the operation of the Bank of the South . We believe that in this upcoming process, progress can be made and these proposals deepened to transform the country’s socioeconomic structures and dynamics.
