During the first three weeks of the government shutdown alone, ICE and CBP spent nearly $10,000,000 on recruitment ads in the U.S., according to researchers interviewed by Rolling Stone. The same researchers said that it is also known that the agencies were purchasing ads in Mexico in the same timeframe, though it was impossible to know how much was spent. All this as ICE and CBP agents were among the miniscule percentage of government workers being paid during the shutdown, and new hires were still being promised their $50k signing bonus.

It’s difficult to imagine how that money could have been better spent. Oh wait, it’s not: just ask any of the thousands of government workers who were laid off, the hundreds of thousands who were furloughed, the millions whose SNAP benefits were threatened or suspended… just to name a few.
