The Russian Foreign Ministry announces that the main areas of bilateral cooperation will be reviewed, including regional and international issues and the coordination of positions in multilateral forums such as the UN.

Russian President Vladimir Putin received North Korean Foreign Minister Choi Son-hui in Moscow on Monday for a meeting focused on strengthening bilateral ties and coordinating prospects for future cooperation.

During the meeting, Putin recalled the talks he held with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Beijing. “Everything is going according to plan, as smoothly as possible ,” the Russian leader stated, taking the opportunity to extend his best wishes to the North Korean leader.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Choi Son-hui’s official visit will take place from October 26 to 28, with the aim of deepening cooperation between the two countries and consolidating existing diplomatic relations .

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with Choe Son-hui as part of the strengthening of political and military ties between the two countries.

The meeting precedes the International Conference on Eurasian Security, which will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday in Minsk, Belarus, where both delegations will participate.

Lavrov emphasized that cooperation between Russia and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has gained “additional momentum” since the summit held in Pyongyang in June 2024, where the leaders of both countries agreed on a series of strategic commitments . According to the Russian Foreign Minister, this coordination seeks to contribute to building a "fairer world order . "

During the meeting, the Russian Foreign Minister highlighted the role of North Korean fighters in the Kursk region of Russia , which was invaded by Ukrainian troops, and stated that this support strengthens the bonds of brotherhood and historical affinity in the fight for justice.

He also announced that the main areas of bilateral cooperation will be reviewed, including regional and international issues and the coordination of positions in multilateral forums such as the UN.

He also recalled the creation of a Russian-North Korean interparliamentary commission, agreed upon in August during Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin’s visit to North Korea.

For his part, Choe Son-hui highlighted the “solid friendship” between the two countries and expressed his satisfaction with the strategic cooperation.

The meeting comes just months after Lavrov’s visit to Pyongyang and former President Dmitry Medvedev’s trip to the country, where he thanked North Korea for its military support during the conflict with Ukraine.

North Korea has been the only country to support Russia with troops on the ground, sending around 15,000 troops to the Kursk region following the signing of a mutual defense agreement between the two governments in 2024.

The pact, signed during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Pyongyang—his first in 25 years—included a mutual defense clause in the event of external aggression, as well as commitments in the economic, energy, scientific, and military fields .

This agreement consolidated the strategic alliance between the two countries in a context of growing tensions with the West and reaffirmed Moscow and Pyongyang’s intention to coordinate their positions in international forums to promote a "fairer and more multipolar world order . "
