Hundreds of Brazilian organizations have signed a manifesto condemning the interventionist policies of the U.S. government , led by President Donald Trump, as Washington intensifies pressure on the South American country.
" Sovereignty is the power that a people have over themselves . More than two centuries ago, Brazil became an independent nation. During this period, we have struggled to govern our own destiny," reads the document, which was presented at the Faculty of Law of the University of São Paulo with the endorsement of academies of science and letters, unions, associations of lawyers, professors, economists, anthropologists, sociologists, feminist and university groups, among many others .
“We demand the same respect we give to other nations. We repudiate any form of intervention, intimidation, or admonition that seeks to subordinate our freedom as a democratic nation. The Brazilian nation will never relinquish its hard-won sovereignty,” the text emphasizes.
According to a report by the Perseu Abramo Foundation of the Workers’ Party, the slogan “No to tyranny, sovereignty is non-negotiable” was repeatedly repeated during the presentation.
In recent weeks, Trump has threatened to impose a 10% tariff on countries that “align” with the “anti-American” BRICS group and has teased a 50% tariff specifically targeting Brazil. He also demanded that the Latin American country halt the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is accused of plotting a coup.
“Unacceptable” pressure
In this context, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva denounced Trump’s statements as “unacceptable” political pressure, since "attempting to interfere in Brazilian justice is a serious attack on national sovereignty . "
This manifesto, in which numerous Brazilian organizations support Lula and reaffirm their defense of his rights, is part of this context of intense political tension.
“In international relations, Brazil is governed by the principles of national independence , the prevalence of human rights, non-intervention, and the principle of equality among nations. This is what our Constitution establishes,” the letter emphasizes.
“At this grave moment, in which national sovereignty is being attacked in a vile and indecorous manner , civil society is mobilizing, once again, in defense of citizenship, the integrity of institutions, and the social and economic interests of all Brazilians,” the signatory organizations add, recalling that dialogue and negotiation are normal in diplomatic relations, but violence and arbitrariness are not.

I hope the left orgs are able to put enough pressure in the government so it doesn’t capitulate to US interests, like the EU did. Let’s see if Lula finally grew a backbone or if he’ll chicken out and cede to the comprador bourgeoisie.
