Curious what other comrades opinions are on this. Personally, I don’t wear a poppy. And this is not out of any disdain for those who were killed in imperialist wars of course, but of disdain for the military and the imperialist wars themselves.
I do go back and forth on this a bit though, because I don’t want to disrespect the dead, but I also certainly don’t want to show any support to the imperialist apparatus.
No evidence for this but I feel like about half the departed that you are supposed to wear a poppy for would not care if you didn’t wear one.
The tradition itself exists to reinforce the belief that whatever military campaign your nation is engaged is should be unconditionally supported which is nonsense. At the same time I have never seen a strong and collective oppositon to it. So I am loathe to suggest a vocal rejection of it outright. Just do that you can do.
You should wear an Easter Lily instead.
Interesting, I’ve never heard of the Easter Lily, thanks comrade. Do people in Ireland still wear them around Easter?
Mostly by Sinn Féin supporters, afaik.
