Umm, arts… And just any discussion that is neither about politics, memes, world news, technology, faction and flamewar-inducing ones. I JUST WANT TO CHILL AND HAVE SOME FUN!!! (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻ !!!..
Like, c’mon… The Internet was created for the LOLCATS! All the flamewars must be left in the TV and public places.
I JUST WANT TO CHILL AND HAVE SOME FUN!!!
Why can’t the Internet be fun!?!
I remember when it was like fucking Disneyland every fucking day!
BTW, I’m one of the admins at https://beehaw.org
I want the Internet to be fun again for fuck’s sake!
Oh, didn’t know about Beehaw, definitely checking it!
lol This is precisely why I picked Beehaw. 🤙
Yeah, more (kinds of) music, games and webcomics, and laid-back general discussion. Edit: and sports!
Um well the food communities seem to be active and drama-free. Plus the gardening communities. Neither of those topics is on your list. There are also a bunch of animal communities if you really want cat pics lol
Yes to all. Wholeheartedly agreed. We need more creativity, humor, and animals.
I think the broader question may be how lemmy could appeal to more users that aren’t just redditors who value privacy. (Though the same could be said for all FOSS tech)
I’m not sure it’s a question of privacy, but rather a question of free/open source tech
¿Por qué no los dos?
I really miss polandball 😢
That is a very good question. I know Masto blew up when Twitter started to burn down, but it would be nice if we didn’t have to wait for Reddit to tank in order to get healthier engagement here.
I know for me, I would like to see a UI reworking and/or themes, inline GIF support, 2FA implementation, and more diversity in types of communities; but, while I think those things could help, I doubt any of that alone would be a big draw for a wider userbase.
I’d be really curious to know what ideas others have in this regard.
…I would like to see a UI reworking…
One of the nice things about Lemmy is that instances don’t have to use the “official” UI. If one has the time, skill, and inclination, they can make a different frontend to use when users visit the site in a web browser. For example, there is LemmyBB which was made by one of the maintainers.
If you have any specific problems or ideas for improvement for the default UI, you can submit an issue.
But why? What’s wrong with the current UI? Asides from the mild annoyance of having to click on “show context” every time I follow a comment link, the UI works well for me. Certainly much better than Reddit’s new design.
Did you see the option to choose a theme in your settings? Though, the problem is that some of them do not work well, and also it would be good to have more options…
Does Lemmy not already support inline GIFs? It would be nice to be able to post short GIFs or MP4s instead of a picture when making a post… But I understand the storage space concerns… Maybe a strict size limit on the GIFs and MP4s?
GIF test
I just asked the maintainer of pict-rs. They said that gifs get converted into mp4s because mp4s take up less space, but that support for gifs might be introduced to support an upcoming custom emoji feature.
It turns gifs into mp4s.
To be fair, pretty much every Lemmy community is underactive outside of the FOSS ones.
Based on my Reddit favourites, I think I’d like local (city, region, country) ones, as well as ones about specific games (Stardew Valley community when?) and books (Discworld!). Also home decor and cooking ones.
Super neiche communities. I will never be able to fully switch until I can get them. Also shitposting to the degree that reddit has. I get that others may thoroughly hate it but I find it hilarious.
Does lemmy have shitpost communities ? Even if they’re small

I want a vegan one. The vegan community on lemmy.ml isn’t very active.
Cats. I mostly have abandoned R*ddit, but I still have to go to there for the cat pics… But I’m not sure how viable such a community would be on Lemmy, considering that most Lemmings seem to be very concerned about their privacy (and thus not post pictures of their cat), and taking pictures of other peoples’ cats from the internet seems just wrong…
Oh, and I’d like !twosentencehorror@lemmy.ml to be more active, but I’m not even nearly creative enough to contribute to that myself.
I agree, animal videos, especially those with a twist. My current favorite is AnimalsBeingDerps.
Agreed! More animals in general, please. I’d love to see alternatives to BabyElephantGifs, LittleGrabbies, Ekekek, and the million dog subreddits I follow. lol
Not exclusively cats, but there is !aww@lemmy.ml.
More gaming communities, specifically related to Linux gaming/Steam Deck.
For me, it’s all the variety of niches. I have a small custom electronics company. I occasionally will post a question in r/smallbusiness, r/electronics, or r/projectmanagement.
It’s going to be awhile until we have all those communities in the Fediverse.
Also, I like Reddit UI better. I think as Lemmy gains more people and more options on UI it’ll naturally be better.
