I’m seeing a lot of this 25th amendment talk and everything, but couldn’t Dems just pull their Biden as their nomination? The DNC was able to fuck Bernie six ways from sunday, shouldn’t they just be able to say, “actually, we’re not going with Biden, we choose this other fuckin guy?” or is it just somehow too late for that?

Yes, they definitely can, but that might lead to them winning, and then they might have to govern, and that tends to get in the way of fundraising.

The problem is that theu know Kamala Harris will be absolutely demolished if they run her. And they kinda have to run the VP if they realize they can no longer run the president.

          They can, but would they?

Liberals have always been about the letter of the law (when it suits them), and I really don’t think they would here. They’re far too busy thinking of how they can pin it on Biden falling apart at the seams and all the money they’re gonna make fundraising during Trump 2.

Newsom has been setting this up for a while. I was talking about it in the news thread. Whether other dem factions will go for it though is anyone’s guess. Supposedly there’s a pretty broad faction in the House that wants Gretchen Whitmer.

Honestly, she doesn’t seem terrible. She seems better than Newsom but I doubt she’d win due to coming out of nowhere and being a woman. Also since she’s just a governor I haven’t had my opinion of her tainted by her inevitably dogshit foreign policy.

They don’t have to run Kamala, and only would to cement a defeat in November.

Biden would likely be resentful and attempt to run as independent which would split the vote. He’s paid his dues and won’t allow anyone to take his reward

I’m not sure they can but only because the president is head of the party right? If he agrees to stand down though then they can do whatever the fuck they like, voters and selfies be dammned.

In one excruciating early moment — while trying to advertise his administration’s efforts to cap the prices of prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries — Biden said that he had been “making sure that we’re able to make every single solitary person eligible for what I’ve been able to do with … the Covid … excuse me, with, um, dealing with everything we have to do with … uh … look … if … we finally beat Medicare.”

They can nominate whoever they want, it just takes a rules change, and that requires a majority vote. This is an emergency. The pilot is unconscious. Grab the controls, or the plane will hit the mountainside.

Another dying dem stubbornly refuses to retire for no logical reason? Leaving a power vacuum for fascism (not that Biden isn’t plenty fascist in his own right)?

Where have I heard that before?

It’s actually (hilariously) up to more than just Genocide Joey.

That’s right, Jack. She didn’t just fall out of a coconut tree yesterday!

Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.

So the wording is super long winded (holy fuck this is why lawyers shouldn’t exist or be in power) but it seems per the 25th amendment Kamala could, with agreement from Biden’s cabinet, assume the presidency. If Joe doesn’t contest it, she would just stay. If Joe did contest it, it would go to congress to decide if the president (Joe) is actually fit to be president. The wording also seems to indicate the acting-president, formerly the VP, would remain acting-president during the decision time allowed to congress.

It would require 2/3 majority vote in both houses to finalize the ousting if it came to that- which would be interesting to see because it’s almost like a legalized coup at that point. If you assume all the Rs just want chaos and to vote against Biden (not a safe assumption, but just assuming for now) it would need like 50 or something dems in the house and like 16 or 17 (too lazy to look up the actual numbers each party holds right now) dems in the senate to vote to kick him/keep Kamala. If republicans decide to gum shit up because they would rather Trump face Biden, not Kamala, they could just fuck the whole “coup” and cause a tiny meltdown in doing so because then it’s just “dictator Joe” (Trump owes me if he uses this) desperately clinging to power when his VP and cabinet said he needs to go.

God I hope this happens purely for entertainment and chaos value.

I did say previously that they’d never 25th their own guy, but I didn’t anticipate him being THIS pathetic. I thought his handlers would be smart enough to cancel this debate (maybe he threatened them into letting him do it? I remember a recent article about him being violently angry towards staffers), and just generally lock him away until after the election, heavily staged events aside.

Maybe they would? Thought like you alluded to, I doubt Conservatives would impeach him because he’s so obviously withering away and the DNC apparatus is in full blown panic right now.

I’m with Her ™️ the real Her. Kamala Harris.

I believe she can do it. She only has to lay off the whatever she’s on. Xanax or whatever for like a month or two to do the coup

  • Democrats spent the entire four years of Trump’s presidency studying the 25th Amendment and trying to figure out how to get it applied to kick Trump out for being incoherent

Now that their boy has brain matter dripping from his ears, they suddenly forgot about the 25th and oh no, the president has to cooperate and decide to step down himself

On the other hand, they’re right

On the other, this is an electoral decision, innit… and this is going to end up as the ‘oh, I was always opposed to Joe Biden becoming…’ face-turn…

But they’d need the president’s cooperation

Yeah, uh, ogey… good luck with that, I guess…
