The Asian diet has similar benefits, plus both are the tastiest. I am from Spain and adding to the diet, there are also very good Beer and Vine.

I’ve heard (anecdotally) that the Japanese diet needs to watch for high vinegar (salt, see replies) leading to stomach cancers, but otherwise an excellent diet. And you gotta love raw fish and miso!

I’m really dubious on the vinegar thing. Your stomach is naturally way more acidic than vinegar, so I don’t see how vinegar can cause harm. And it’s not like Japanese food involves taking shots of the stuff before each meal. If you’re referring to vinegar in rice, it is a very small amount all things considered.

First time I heard about vinegar but Japan indeed historically has high stomach cancer cases… iirc once I read it had to do with added salt.

(I replied to the other comment in detail, you’re right, it was salt.)

This salt historically was for conserving food iirc (I made a post sharing some articles on Japan ban on meat that talks about it). Guess it just became culture for seasoning too much or it still is used for conserving food?

Fortunately today stomach cancer in those cases is treatable. Until at least early 90s Japanese people much suffered bc of that; arguably a miracle to survive it then

You were right to call it dubious, I was incorrectly informed. Salt is considered the major suspected culprit. A search for “japan diet stomach cancer” will give a bunch of studies and articles, I of course can’t verify them but it’s definitely a studied phenomenon. One study says: “Mortality ratios [from stomach cancer] are higher in northern Japan, particularly in areas facing the Japan Sea” while many in the south “show low rates”.

The Mediterranean Diet is not a dietary pattern, it’s a way of life, and very healthy indeed.
