So my understanding is that most/all online games will try to authenticate and therefore won’t allow you to access online content, right? I saw one torrent host advise blocking program from getting online or communicating thru steam.

I’ve wanted to snag Overwatch e.g. but was worried about this.

Speaking of Steam, I saw some “steam codes” or something that allow you to get a game through steam. Any risks associated with this?

Sorry for confusion, I had these thoughts like a week ago

Edit: thanks for the answers, comrades. Happy pirating!

If you want to play online, you have to buy it there is basically no way around it. There are some sites that sell cheap steam keys so you could try that, just research the site a bit first.

Sorry for the reply to a 2yo comment - anyway, I remember I used to play a few pirated games online by using different servers than steam, I don’t remember what it was called but it meant basically all pirates playing togethers.

edit : found it! it was tunngle! Saddly it’s history now :/ There seem to be some alternatives out there. Some mention Hamachi but Hamachi doesn’t provide a server list so you can join other randos to play a game as far as I remember, you need to talk to people you know to make a “fake lan party” basically.

I guess lemmy can be a place to organize this is people want to …

Steam codes would only be a risk if they were stolen or obtained from a hacked account. So there is a risk of an account ban if you’re caught

Overwatch is Blizzard, not Valve, and you need to authenticate through Battle.net to access it

Not to mention that Blizzard is controlled by the chinese government, so as a leftist, I would proudly purchase their content. c/shitliberalssay

Exactly why when everyone was whining about Blizzard being owned by the PRC, I was excited because then all the people overloading WoW Classic would leave and I could be supporting socialism with Chinese characteristics

No but really thanks for the feedback. Not to mention that my Steam account has payment info so I’ll definitely going to make a new one before fucking with that

Ya it’s a bit dangerous, if connected to your own account. Single player games I’m sure are fine tho. I wonder if anyone’s cracked the new doom yet.

Bethesda accidentally released a drm free version of it themselves so there’s no need for a crack, only difference is you need to sign into a bethesda account to play it.

If you get it, let me know what you think. I would have to uninstall my current games to make room, so I’m hesitant to get anything new just yet.
