And also why? Some recommendations? Some app that you think that is not as famous as it should be? Etc etc
- Aegis Authenticator, IMO the best TOTP app out there.
- mpv-android to play almost any kind of multimedia files.
- Organic Maps for an OpenStreetMaps-based navigation, and doesn’t require an Internet connection to operate.
- StreetComplete to fill missing OpenStreetMaps info you encounter, in an almost fun manner.
- Syncthing-Fork for a Syncthing client with some good mobile-specific tweaks.
- Termux to emulate and run a bunch of console-based softwares (like youtube-dl, etc).
- AirGuard to detect if you’re being tracked by an Apple AirTag without your knowledge.
Yes, Aegis is the best TOTP app. I recently switched from Authy to Aegis and it is pretty good.
Before I also had authy, but it really sucks in comparation.
But I miss the multi device sync of authy. It is so convenient and easy.
You can set up syncthing (1 click on whatever device) and sync a backup encripted. And if you want PC to phone sync use KeePass + Syncthing
Thank you :)
andOTP is on par with Aegis for pretty much everything. Except for one thing I hear Aegis has now: exporting from google auth, which can be very handy for some people.
Syncthing-fork is so useful, the once an hour sync for battery was a great thing to add.
What’s the difference between OsmAnd+ and Organic Maps?
Organic Maps, basic, smooth.
OsmAnd+, much more advanced, somewhat clunky.
Okay, I will give Organic Maps a try (I currently use OsmAnd+ and I like it but sometimes it becomes unstable and slow). Ty for the info :)
I’d also be interested in knowing more.
Basically the same concept, I prefer the UI/UX of Organic Maps.
Thanks a bunch for AirGuard! Didn’t know such an app existed.
I agree that Aegis is one of the bests apps that I seen for TOTP. But for the moment I also have my TOTP on KeePass since I can sync them between my pc and phone. I didn’t try organic maps but I will give it an eye. I use OsmAnd. I also have street complete for improving maps. And about Syncthing fork, what’s are de differences between the fork and the vanila one? I’m interested
For differences between Syncthing and Syncthing fork, see Syncthing fork repository description. All in all, nothing major, but I use the fork nonetheless and I am content with what I get.
i too use keepassdx TOTP feature. works fine for me.
The fork adds the ability to schedule sync more granularly, ie: only runs for 5 minutes every hours, the ability to set different sync conditions per share (ie: one folder syncs at all time on any network, another folder only when charging and on wifi, etc), etc.
Ohhh, it seams really interesting. I’m going to give it an eye!
- Mull: web browser
- QKSMS: text messaging with import/export support.
- K-9 Mail
- andOTP
- Vanilla Music
- DroidShows: because I sometimes forget where I left off when watching a show
- OsmAnd~: it’s so-so for road navigation, but absolutely fantastic for hiking
- and finally lemmur, naturally
Haven’t tried it yet myself, but I’ve heard that Organic Maps is much smoother and faster alternative to OsmAnd~.
It does look nice, thanks for the suggestion! I’ll give it a spin next time I’m hiking.
Fair Mail works way better for me than K9
I find FairMail better suited for my needs, too, but both are great e-mail clients with extensible customizability. It is up to your preferences, I suppose.
I would recommend you https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.dystopia.email/
That is an interesting suggestion. I have never encountered anything wrong with FairMail, but I will look into it now, as I have not been exactly looking for it. This one seems as a nice FLOSS alternative from the looks of things. I do not like that it has not been updated in 10 months as of now, though. Still suitable to at least consider it nonetheless.
I would love to use Lemmur, but I’ve been unable to add the lemmy.ca instance to it. It just says “Instance not found”
You’re better off switching to Jerboa, that’s what I did. Lemmur is no longer in development.

Damn, reading the comments and I’m replacing a lot of my apps :p
Just recently found Barista. Its an alternative instagram client that lets you browse privately and does not expose you to their stupid algorithm. Also Infinity to go on Reddit.
I also use Infinity (Slide also cool, a lot of customisation) but I think that Barista was discontinued because Facebook being a jerk. But afaik it was an amazing client.
It may be discontinued, but its still on fdroid and still works
It’s called Barinsta in case anybody is looking for it:
https://f-droid.org/en/packages/me.austinhuang.instagrabber/
Thanks.
Development has stopped, not working anymore because of expected Meta lock-in.
Apps are neat, but from a minimalistic view all you need is a powerful browser and the factory apps (phone, notes, calculator, calendar, clock, contacts). The latter you can substitute with better ones like Simple Notes or Simple Clock. For more demanding stuff you’d want to use a proper computer anyway, from my experience a phone is mainly a communication & browsing device.
I use my laptop when I want a full size keyboard, but nothing beats having a computer in my pocket!
Interesting point of view, I can agree that when possible I prefer to use my computer for heavy/tedious tasks.
Aegis, as others have mentioned
Lemmur - Lemmy client
Crypto Prices - handy count tracker with notifications
Shattered pixel Dungeon - randomized dungeon game
Tripeaks - the game
Sokoban - the game
K9 mail
Noice - ambient / white noise generator with mixing and profiles
Trying to figure out lemmy still, I’m not sure why my post shows up twice on my phone. Deleting deleted both.
That happens to me (on lemmur) every now and again. I have learned to be patient and refresh the page. The duplication resolves itself without any input from me. I am almost certain that it is a local duplicate only, so no one else sees it (which is why deleting deletes both).
With Lemmur right?
Yup, lemmur
MuPDF viewer is a simple pdf/cbz viewer. One nice thing about it is how easy it is to open multiple documents at the same time. If you use your tablet for document review, this is a nice feature. The big downside is that the built-in file browser can’t access SD cards.
Ghost Commander is a dual-panel file manager that is useful if you move files around on your device fairly often. It supports SD cards, although write access can vary depending on Android version.
Termux is useful if you’re used to command-line tools. It supports bash, zsh, etc and the built-in package manager is good. I have successfully used ssh-related commands, vim, emacs, lynx, elinks, newsboat, cmus, mc, ncdu, and other programs from the desktop world on my android devices. Very useful, especially with Hacker’s Keyboard, which makes it easy to enter CTL, ALT and F1-F12 keystrokes on an Android Device.
Librera Reader is a very nice option for ebooks, comics and PDFs. It has read support for SD cards and works well with built-in text-to-speech if you like to have a robot voice read your books aloud to you while while you drive or work out. It reminds me a lot of Moon+ Reader, but it’s available on F-Droid.
Flym is a decent rss reader - I’ve been using it for a few years without incident.
VLC and Kodi are available through F-Droid if you’ve got a media collection on your device. Additionally, VLC can stream network-shared media if you’re on your home network and want to watch something that isn’t stored on your device. Also it can cast content if you have a chromecast on one of your TVs.
For gaming, you could download Dosbox or Scummvm (or add the Retroarch repository) if you have some old DOS games or you’ve downloaded some ScummVm-type adventure games from GOG and you want to play them on the go. The interface is a bit clunky but you can share the save files with your other devices using Syncthing.
Here’s a slightly more niche gaming recommendation - I’ve been enjoying OMW a lot lately. It’s one of several Android-focused ports of OpenMW that is available on F-Droid. With a bit of help from syncthing, you can play TES Morrowind on your PC and then pick up from the same spot later on your phone or tablet. The controls take a bit of getting used to, but it can be done! Who needs Skyrim when there’s an older, better alternative?
