Respectfully, what are you hoping to get out of this post? The situation in the u.s. is the result of a shitty electoral democracy where the best networked, and therefore the best financed always buy the most electorate, and the older you are, the bigger your network of donors.

I think part of the point might be discussion of the topic? How it occurs and how to prevent it? That’s why I’m guessing they posted it. I’m assuming that’s what most of these “thoughts on” posts are about, though I think something like this should be mentioned in the sidebar.

I appreciate your candor and calm response. TBH I’ve been noticing some low effort posts on this comm and I think I was frustrated.

I’ve been thinking about doing a “thoughts on thoughts on” post where I ask people what they think about this place and what they think it could be used for, but I always forget (plus it might sound kind of mean).

age-based anything is always false and wrong because everyone gets old. Not everyone gets poor or black or etc

blaming stuff on age is one of the purest lib takes, like the libs on reddit who think racism is limited to people 50+ and that the internet isn’t full of under 20s chanting “total slur death” and having the highest school shooting/per capita stats in US history

Biden is seven years older than the oldest Soviet leader (Stalin, who died at 74). Reagan and Trump were also older than any Soviet leader by the end of their terms.

I think it’s a fair point, TBH. It certainly seems to me like the Soviets relied too much on the old guard, as the vanguards of the revolution and the ones holding the ship together in general- and as the old guard died off as humans inevitably do, rot entered the system in their place, and eventually those holding the reins primarily were sellouts and the criminally naive.

The US has lasted far longer, but it’s also had the luck of the devil (and no small amount of imperial looting, war profiteering, and essentially inheriting the “post-colonial” order from western Europe) at its disposal; no other country in history has had such a privileged, and wretched history. In contrast, the Soviets essentially were besieged since the October revolution until the Soviet dissolution. One country clearly had more advantages, and more room for error, than the other.

To echo some other comments, everyone gets old. I have many comrades that are up there in age, people don’t change their view/principles/morals/etc just because they became older.

I would ask more thoughts on what happens when a leader or representative begins to suffer from health problems that affect their ability to perform the duties of their position.

I’m in favour of being able to recall elected representatives and I feel like a situation similar to the above is a democratic way of approaching the problem.

A pretty good indicator that you are living in a place that doesn’t really have a democratic system of electing people.
