A federal judge has ruled that the type of “zero-tolerance” policy that led to family separations and other cruel deterrence policies at the U.S.-Mexico border is illegal until at least December of 2031—an 8-year reprieve from a horrific policy that never should have been considered in the first place. The prohibition comes as part of the settlement of a lawsuit by families represented by the ACLU. The article notes that there are still 68 children who may be separated from their families, five years after an initial court-ordered halt to family separations.

Wow, 8 whole years? Sadly, I’m sure that people actually will forget in that amount of time.
