I just watched a guy cover tinned beans in mayonnaise and call it bean salad.
Edit: This is the definition of salad people.
USian restaurants: no we don’t have any vegan or even vegetarian salads, but if you want we can charge you full price and just not put grilled chicken on top
One of my biggest pet peeves.
A “garden salad” that doesn’t include the ½ inch of shredded cheese in the ingredient list 🤮
Where I am now has pretty solid vegan options on the menu but places I’ve worked that don’t I’ve let front of house know if anyone they serve is vegan I’ll come talk to them and we’ll figure something out. I could do rice bowls of various flavors, burritos, a few pastas, it wasn’t hard to improv a decent dish
I need one of you in every non-Asian or non-vegan restaurant in my town.
Ordered a marinara and pasta dish at dinner event a few months back and told them no dairy or meat and it came with fucking cheese on it. Then the wait staff tried to gaslight me into not recognizing melted grated Parm on the prongs of my fork. But comped me a beer “just in case”.
It was supposed to be an easy meal to request and they still managed to fuck it up. And no it didn’t say it came with cheese. I’m still mad about. Pasta, marinara, veggies. How hard is that?
but don’t always have the option to cook at vegan places cause there’s 2 and the one I worked at before can’t pay me what I’m getting now, employment is a series of moral compromises anyway, so here I am. But I do always try to get some good vegan options on the menu if not have some recipes in the chamber so we can put something together. Usually it’s cooks and chefs being absolutely tradition brained with food and literally don’t understand food that doesn’t have meat. Especially now it’s something that at least the chef would like to cater to but they’ve never gone a week without meat themselves, which if your job is to know food in and out, you should be able to make a decent vegan dish pretty easily. However, most are also happy to learn cause getting to really know veggies has universal applications too.
I’m usually stoked to make up a vegan thing cause it means I can get a bit creative and make off menu stuff.
I did clarify my comment. I meant any non-vegan restaurant. I reread that just now and realized it wasn’t clear.
We do have a nice “gastro” place that has a really good selection of vegan stuff and they usually have a vegan version of their special. We are regulars enough that the girl hat runs the register knows that I will prob get the vegan special regardless of what it is. The thing that sucks is that I’ve been meaning to get their mushroom tacos again but every special when we go sounds so good. Last week they has a vegan lasagna and it was probably the best lasagna I had vegan or not.
We have a food truck that has a pretty big menu for a food truck but the guy also made an asserted effort to have a full vegan menu too. He’s super nice and I’m a regular there too. We have one other full vegan truck too ran by 2 sisters that used to be part of our local Food Not Bombs but wanted to do the food truck thing. Leftist vegans in my shithole Texas town? What?
But other than that, taco bell is hit and miss on if they can even get an order right and I still have to check the menu ahead of time when I go to most other places in town so I am not trying to fined something to eat on the spot.
I wish there was more places that did what you do and try and cater to us other pesky vegans and know that vegan isn’t the same as gluten free… smh…
Maybe for my midlife crisis I will start a vegan restaurant…
I’ve tried to emphasize at places that if you have good vegan options that automatically gets you so many regulars. Eating out is hard for a vegan and word spreads quick if there’s good slop.
Would you like another serving of Spaghetti-O hotdog salad?
Delicious. Finally some good fucking food
it’s like someone tried to make 60s US food worse
Why do people point at 1 definition as though it’s the only thing a word can mean. Most words have more than 1 definition plus there is no authority over language so the meaning of a word follows usage.
I’m sorry. I’m illiterate
Good on you comrade. Don’t let the red fash teach you how to read, they only want to propagandize you more easily.
Babe what’s wrong? You’ve barely touched your gelatin marshmallow salad.
What the fuck. That’s all I have to say honestly.
Midwest recipes are based on a dare.
The Midwest failing to beat the alcoholism charges.
please don’t slander alcoholics like this, some of us have standards when it comes to food
Beer is food, right?
Fr, a lot of us are cooks.

Counterpoint: “Fruit salad, yummy yummy” (The Wiggles, 1994)
Also Merriam Webster has a more expansive definition
Okay I will accept fruit salad too

Etymology of salad from Wiktionary
From Middle English salade, from Old French salade, borrowed from Northern Italian salada, salata (compare insalata), from Vulgar Latin *salāta, from *salāre, from Latin saliō, from sal (“salt”).
a salad is something salty
Yummy salt lick salad with extra salt. Good for what ails ya
I read that in the voice and cadence of that NPC tik toker.
Mmmm, salad so good.
Potato salad or kartoffelsalat is a popular German dish that’s been around longer than America’s existence
Also I went to that site and you cut off the second definition 💀💀
My political days are over. NO MORE QUESTIONS
“a usually incongruous mixture : HODGEPODGE”
A salad is when you mix stuff together.
I’ll mix you together
Fried rice is a salad
Gonna start calling the music I listen to while writing code “salad”
Ok but potato salad, tuna salad, and chicken salad are all good.
Also this Slovak fish salad looks good, but it doesn’t match your definition.
I WILL NUT EAD DA FUGGIN SALAD

Post that definition in Eastern Europe to instantly trigger three national blood fueds and an ethnic cleansing.
someone break out a salad version of the “sandwich alignment chart”
Introducing the 75th annual struggle session. May the odds be forever in your flavour.
I think “salads” like that are mainly a midwestern boomer thing. The thing with salads I’ve seen more is people who think it’s mainly just chopped lettuce with ranch dressing (mayonnaise based sauce) and everything else is unnecessary. Even basic, common vegetables like tomatoes or cucumbers are seen as overly “fancy”
I got caught off guard at a Subway in Australia. The worker asked me what kind of salad do I want on my sandwich. I’m like, no thanks, just the sandwich. It took a minute or two for me to realize they consider salad to be all uncooked vegetables. Is that correct or was it maybe a small town thing (I was in Sale).
No this is correct, more convenient than asking “what fruit/vegetables would you like on the sandwich”
like good marxists, we must apply the dialectical method to resolving this contradiction in the conditions of salad
im throwing marshmellows and mayonaise into a Niçoise we’ll figure this out
