As a kid I never really liked black pete because to me he was just a guy that wears make-up and that was kinda gay

I was sort of scared of them. I do have a blackface picture of myself when I was like 4, though. Very unfortunate.

I dressed up like him once, and I have pictures. But I didn’t do the blackface because I didn’t like the feeling of make-up on my face.

In recent years more and more municipalities banned the use of blackface character Black Pete, but unfortunately it still happens. This year Kick Out Black Pete managed to change the festivities in several municipalites who decided to finally ban Black Pete. One town called Enter, in the eastern part of The Netherlands, didn’t go along and decided to ban the festivities all together, instead of just banning Black Pete.

They want to keep the tradition but when people are telling them to make the tradition less racist they just ban the festivities altogether?

Something tells me it was never about the tradition but just about not giving black people what they want

It is less talked about. There were some protests in Kortrijk apparently. Kortrijk decided to have both roetveegpiet and zwarte piet 🤡. There were some in Sint-Niklaas but the protests got banned because far right groups wanted to counter protest. Overall it’s mostly roetveegpieten like in The Netherlands. Still, work needs to be done.

Honest question: what is to be criticized about this, since you say critical support?
