The self-hosted one in your closet ;)
I thought this, store everything on an external disk, but I lose the mobility of files when necessary.
Not sure what you mean? Just connect your self-hosted Nextcloud in your closet to the internet and you got access to it anywhere?

You make it sound like an insurmountable hurdle. NextcloudPI is a thing as is YuNoHost etc. and ARM SBC are super cheap.
I also used NextcloudPi the first years and later bought some more reliable server space when I needed it. NextcloudPi is really great!
The question is “free” for what? If you’re looking for a demo instance, there’s plenty around. If you’re looking for an instance for your personal needs, you may be well served by an established tech cooperative (see libreho.st, chatons.org or tildeverse.org for such). These usually operate on a donation (free-price) basis, so depending on your $$$$ you may or may not donate money. If you’re looking to host an entire collective, that’s gonna cost you some $$$$
I have an agroecological library, several documents, few images to store and synchronize, less than 4gb, but I can’t pay now, although I consider it necessary.
I’d probably go look a Syncthing… Probably the easiest solution for what you’ve described
I have one email address with them I use all the time (for commercial stuff), it’s very reliable. You also get a Nextcloud account with 4GB storage.
I also use Zaclys. 1GB Nextcloud for free, 5€ (a year) for 5GB + plus an email account or 10€ for 10GB and email. Even though I self host now I still use it for my main email. Also unlimited pictures upload!

Point of correction: disroot free version gives you 2GB storage for nextcloud
Mine clearly shows 4, but maybe thats because it’s an old account?
I use Disroot, 'tis great :)
Well 4GB isn’t so little, but i’m guessing there’s a few tilde servers where you could get a user account with that kind of storage based on donation. If you don’t have the money now, you’ll pay when you can :)
So with your personal space you get a shell account (SSH), plus usually some web/gemini space (that’s a huge benefit so you can share your posts/research) and an email account.
thank you all for the great suggestions. Zaclys seems very fast, Disroot is a great option too. 💓
I forgot to mention Allsync, it’s one euro a year for 50GB.
It seemed too good to be true but I subscribed to try it and everything worked. You have access to the Nextcloud parameters, can install apps, create new users. Also you get a free subdomain which is neat.
This was 2 years back and they’re still up and running. This one is not a non profit like the others mentioned here.
I used this video as a guide:

But there are other options, like setting up on a local NAS, or even a Raspberry Pi.
