The consensus is basically status quo. No open hostilities with US or China. Which seems like just about the most “normal” approach for a population to take given the current population’s situation.

It would probably be my stance if I lived there because even if you did want to officially rejoin mainland China that’s immediately going to cause the US to pettily kill any sort of contracts for chips and whatever else. That’s at a minimum. The US has a bit of a bad history of not accepting the decisions of places if it disagrees with the outcome. I could easily see a democratic vote to formally reintegrate fully with China being called a CHINESE RUSSIAN COUP and whatever other shit. CIA ghouls would be on Fox and CNN 24/7 assuring us we need to nuke Taiwan for its own good.

I dunno, at the moment there’s really no good way for them to get out from under US or China influence even if they wanted to. They know they can’t cut with China 100% because then they lose that special status of “ehhh we coulllllllld go back to old Daddy. Give us another contract!” with the US. I doubt China would bother doing anything militarily, but obviously any aid and whatever they may receive would probably go in the dumpster from China if Taiwan did cut off.

They’re honestly in an overall completely dog shit but simultaneously great position. Yes, they will be bombarded and die immediately in the case of the US being insane and actually doing a war (I highly doubt China/Xi has any real intention or interest in EVER provoking the west in such a way. He’s not stupid) but, since that unlikely, and we’ll all be dead eventually if that did happen, they can kinda just play both sides off each other as they have been for decades. Just don’t go full Ukraine. You never go full Ukraine.

The status quo can be seen as “being a separate entity” but it could also be seen as “ever deepening economic integration with the mainland”

Oh thanks, I needed a name around the time the BBC published a story on the Russians shelling Tarkov, though most probably think it’s a reference to the game.
