Inspired by the weekly reading thread by @Saymaz@lemmygrad.ml, I’ve decided to begin posting a weekly listening thread as a space to discuss things we’ve been listening to recently.

So, have at it! Popular or classical, western or non-western, communist or even anti-communist, feel free to mention any and all kinds of music here.

Been going back and re-listening to 2000s metalcore which was the golden age for the genre. Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying (fuck you Tim Lambesis), I killed the prom queen etc.

love that preston track!! the piano part is so iconic: part rag, part something else. i was never really able to get into dvorak: which movement of the symphony you linked would you recommend the most?

I recommend Largo the most (it’s time stamped in the video description). It starts with this almost lullaby feel to it, my favorite part is at around 13:30. And this symphony in general has sentimental meaning to me. When I was in college, I got to see a performance of it live, which was a gift from a member of the orchestra I’d interviewed for a class assignment. They were really nice about it and happy to answer questions.

oh yeah, i recognize this melody! i think i’ve played a piano transcription, or maybe heard someone else play a piano transcription of it; it’s one of the classics. and that’s really cool that you had that personal connection to the performance, that always makes it feel more interesting and exciting for sure. what kind of class did you interview them for, was it a music class?

Oh, do you play the piano?

But yeah, it was a nice thing. Was for a music class of a kind yeah. Kind of a musical history/culture study kind of thing if I remember right. It’s been a while.

i do! i really want to learn the preston track now haha, the riff is so good and i have it stuck in my head all the time now. have you heard the cover by AJ croce?

that sounds awesome! i’m glad you enjoyed it and had a good experience with it.

That’s awesome, good for you. I’ve sometimes had aspirations to learn a musical instrument, but never found the right context to do it in I guess (and instruments can be expensive lol). I haven’t heard that cover before, but I just looked it up and it’s really good. :D Best of luck with learning the track… or, uh, best of dialectical process with learning it. Something like that. :P

yeah, having access to instruments + taking lessons can be prohibitively expensive for a lot of people, and it takes a time commitment that can be difficult to, well, commit to. but, singing is always free, at least!

and thanks! i might not learn it all the way but it’s still fun to fiddle around with

Cool idea, comrade! Lately I’ve been listening to F# A# ∞ , something about post-rock just helps me zone out. Also loving Deathconsciousness (CW: gore) for much the same reason, it’s oddly relaxing. I especially love the shift midway through the track hunter, which unfolds into a wall of sound with a calm voice in the background, anchoring the listener.

in hunter, that initial drum beat is so stark that when it finally changes at the song’s apex you really notice it. and the extreme echos on the vocals and other parts makes it sound so otherworldly.

if you had to describe post-rock in one sentence, how would you?

Yep, that’s what I love about that album!

For post-rock, I guess I’d describe it as “much longer, textured, atmospheric, experimental rock.” Deathconsciousness is more shoegaze (think “wall of sound” like the second half of Hunter) than post-rock, whereas F#A#∞ is more standard post-rock. The shortest song on the album is 16 minutes, and the longest is 29. It really draws you in, makes you feel like you’re somewhere else. Repitition, long textured winding paths, almost droning.

What I personally love is that it’s extremely relaxing when the mood is right for it. I also tend to like ambient, my favorite ambient album being Brian Eno’s Music for Airports. They have different moods, but both are capable of taking my mind off things for their duration, or letting me focus on work I need to get done!

that’s really interesting, thanks for the explanation! and yeah, the influence of brian eno and minimalism in general on tracks or genres like that makes a lot of sense to me. i’ve never been able to fully get into ambient stuff myself for both ideological and sensory reasons (that’s a long discussion lol), but i think about the correlation between it and popular music a lot. and, it makes a lot of sense to me as calm, inoffensive background music for work, meditation, or in this case walking around an airport hahaha.

Yep! Just relaxing to me. I’m unaware of ideological reasons to not be into ambient, but if you don’t want to open that can of worms that’s fine!

It took me awhile, but I’ve finally caught up with The Protomen. Act III came out at the beginning of this year, but I was waiting for all the liner notes to be available before digging in.

Definitely have some conflicted feelings on the narrative but the music, as always, is top notch. Calling Out has been stuck in my head.

It’s a happy coincidence this leg of the narrative follows a group of revolutionaries.

whoa, this is super cool! never heard of it before. very 80s rock + game soundtrack + epic opera.

what are your conflicting feelings regarding the narrative?

You’re in for a treat! It’s an incredibly creative and novel rock opera. First album came out in 2005, second in 2009, so there’s been a big wait for this third release. The whole premise is loosely based on the Megaman IP, giving it nerdshit cred. You have some catching up to do for sure. If you check it out, definitely watch a video that includes the liner notes + lyrics.

Narrative wise I wouldn’t want to spoil anything, but it must have been really tricky to meet the expectations of a 16 year wait.

thanks for the tip, i’m sure reading the libretto will make it a lot more understandable than not haha. has it ever been performed live, or is it purely recorded?

yeah that makes sense regarding the long wait, i’m sure the anticipation was in some ways overflowing. at least it came out in the first place! i feel like sometimes with these huge projects they can get so overblown and feature crept that the final entry never comes out at all.

recently i’ve been listening to the soundtracks to both final fantasy 6 and 7, both games that i’ve started but never finished before. there are some really iconic tracks! and, it’s interesting thinking about how ultimately the instrumentation for them is pretty symphonic, with the addition of things like guitar, a drum kit, and synths. i think for symphonic sounds i definitely prefer soundtracks to any modern “classical” composer out there nowadays.

really enjoyed the background samples on “grassroots,” very chill and relaxing, while feeling grand at the same time.
