I talked to a liberal friend of mine who defended planned obsolescence saying “if things last forever, people won’t have to buy new things, and innovation won’t happen without new consumers”

Like why should I be replacing everything I own every few years? That’s insane

We don’t have infinite resources to create new things every year. Planned obsolescence is a contributor for the destruction of our planet and for climate change. Your liberal friend is just brainwashed by capitalism to believe that forcing consumers to buy every year produces innovation. It just keeps people broke. And on the contrary of what your friend believes , capitalism stagnates innovation because what doesn’t sell won’t be produced no matter how helpful it is for humanity.

My thoughts exactly. We’ve innovated greener technology, only problem is they aren’t profitable enough to be widespread in capitalism

Yeah, on capitalism nothing gets done if it cannot make a profit.
